Safety and Bike Accessibility Notes

From the Greenbush MBTA station, there are good opportunities to see a number of the historic sites on foot, or to ride the full loop. Those wishing to go east on the Driftway have the privilege of using the generous share use path that runs along the east side from the station district all the way to the turnoff at Greenfield Lane (where the separated path terminates). Those on foot or bike will need to go an additional 100’ beyond Greenfield Lane to access the crosswalk to cross Kent Street. Bicyclists wishing to go faster should consider riding along the Driftway where there are 3’ wide shoulders (of which we hope that someday they will be restriped as bike lanes). From Greenfield Lane to the loop back on Country

Way near the Rt. 123 rotary, walking is likely difficult as there are minimal sidewalks, including none on the bridge over the railroad tracks and along Stockbridge Road down to Country Way. For those who parked at the MBTA station lot and wish to visit the historic Stockbridge Mill, the best bet is to walk along the north side of the New Driftway to the rotary and turn right to access the Mill site. To continue to the Old Oaken Bucket House, one will need to cross the rotary’s well-designed crosswalks at least twice, along with two additional road crossings to access the south side of Oaken Bucket Road. Traffic through the rotary is generally slow enough that bicyclists are safest when they take a lane rather than staying to the far right along the curb.

The Scituate Historic Trails project formed from a partnership between Scituate Historical Society, People for Active Transportation & Health (PATH), and Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary to create and promote walking paths and bike routes connecting historical sites, beaches, downtown businesses and other fun places to relax, learn, eat and enjoy Scituate, a charming New England seaside town founded in 1636. Scituate is a coastal town located 25 miles south of Boston with nearly 17 square miles of history and centuries old character to be enjoyed on foot, on a bicycle or from a boat! From out of town? Hop on the Greenbush Train from South Station with your bike and enjoy a healthy, historical adventure to Scituate Massachusetts.
